New Faces, Old Bhopal
Bhopal was the main destination of our trip to India, with a population of 1.8 million inhabitants. It serves as the state capital of Madhya Pradesh.
Upon our arrival in the city, we were greeted by a huge billboard at the city's entry proclaiming "Welcome to India's cleanest capital."
However, 35 years earlier, this same city witnessed a disastrous gas leak that poisoned thousands of people. The gas leaked from the production facilities of the Union Carbide Pesticide factory, which initially should fuel the global green revolution.
As a student of Geography, I was particularly interested in how this tragic event and its aftermath have influenced and transformed the city's development up to the present day.
