Crystal Mountains Observing micro and macro structures on slag heap

Neuhof 2019

Nicknamed "Monte Kali," this slag heap towers 200 meters above the town of Neuhof in central Germany. It is the monumental byproduct of K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH's nearby salt mine, where excess material—primarily rock salt—is discarded. The mountain steadily grows as 7,000 tons of excess material are pumped onto the heap daily. The excess material consists of excavated salt mixed with water, creating a thick sludge. As the water evaporates, the sludge hardens, giving rise to a vast, artificial mountain—crystalline, barren, and salty. Walking on its surface evokes a hollow, otherworldly sensation. Currently, eight similar mountains exist in Germany.
